Dear VP Rodriguez

PROPOSAL FOR ONLINE IGBO LANGUAGE LEARNING PROGRAMME

REQUEST FOR COLLABORATION

INTRODUCTION

Mother Tongue Academy (MTA) is a United States of America-based institute whose focus is on language lesson development for over forty languages across the globe.

For over a decade, MTA has successfully and effectively operated www.igbo1.com, an Online Igbo Language Learning Program. We are proposing to collaborate with the Office of Continuing Education at Kingsborough Community College to offer an online instructional workshop on the Igbo language. We believe that it will be of benefit to the community to add an African language to the Self-Enrichment part of your Continuing Education program.

The Igbo language is spoken by about 30 million Igbo natives in the Eastern Region of Nigeria (West Africa). It is one of the three major languages of Nigeria, in a country where there are about 250 other minor languages, some of them spoken by up to 5 million natives, but most spoken by a few hundred thousand. Besides the native speakers of the Igbo language, people of neighboring ethnicities within Nigeria, all but adopt the Igbo language as a second or convenient language to facilitate communication. The native speakers of the Igbo language are credited with being the most widely dispersed Nigerians because you will see Igbos highly diffused among other ethnicities inside Nigeria. Of the 35 million native speakers of the Igbo language, about 27 million reside in the Southeast of Nigeria, with about 5 million in other parts of Nigeria and Three Million dispersed around the world. Igbos can be found all over the African continent with about 220,000 Igbo-speaking people in the USA.

The Igbos are known to be enterprising and have a substantial cultural and economic presence in Nigeria. A person traveling in Nigeria, understanding basic Igbo will prove an advantage in communication and business dealings.

Besides the advantages of communication, we believe that offering the Igbo language in your program will enhance the image of your program in promoting global diversity and broaden the horizon of Americans, especially African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans in their understanding of an African language and culture.
